Health And Safety Policy
Deep Cleaning Bermondsey Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and procedures that guide all deep cleaning work carried out by our company in Bermondsey and surrounding areas. We are committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors and anyone who may be affected by our activities.
Policy Statement and Objectives
We recognise our duty to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health. Our objectives are to identify and control risks arising from our deep cleaning operations, to provide safe systems of work, and to continually improve our health and safety performance.
Management is responsible for implementing this policy and ensuring that health and safety considerations are integrated into all aspects of planning and delivering cleaning services. Every employee is required to take reasonable care of their own safety and the safety of others who may be affected by their actions.
Responsibilities and Management Structure
Senior management has overall responsibility for health and safety within the company. This includes setting standards, allocating appropriate resources and monitoring compliance with this policy. Supervisors are responsible for day-to-day implementation on site, including briefing staff, checking equipment and ensuring that safe methods of work are followed.
All cleaning operatives are responsible for cooperating with management on health and safety matters, using equipment properly, following training and instructions, and reporting hazards, incidents or near misses without delay. Contractors or temporary workers engaged for specialist tasks must comply with this policy and any site-specific rules.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We carry out risk assessments for all significant deep cleaning activities, including chemical use, working at height, manual handling, machine operation and work in confined or poorly ventilated spaces. These assessments identify hazards, evaluate risks and determine appropriate control measures.
Site-specific assessments are completed where required to address particular features such as access constraints, building layout, security arrangements or the presence of vulnerable individuals. The findings of risk assessments are communicated clearly to employees and are used to develop safe systems of work and method statements.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Our deep cleaning work involves the use of cleaning chemicals and specialist products. We manage these substances in accordance with recognised safety standards. Control of substances hazardous to health is achieved by assessing each product, selecting safer alternatives where possible, and ensuring that only approved products are used.
Safety data information is available for all chemicals used. Staff receive training in the safe handling, dilution, storage and disposal of products. Personal protective equipment recommended by the supplier is provided and must be worn as instructed. Chemicals are stored securely, clearly labelled and kept away from unauthorised persons, food areas and ignition sources.
Personal Protective Equipment
We supply appropriate personal protective equipment to employees based on risk assessment. This may include gloves, eye protection, masks or respirators, protective footwear, coveralls and hearing protection where necessary. Staff are required to use this equipment correctly, keep it in good condition and report any loss or defect.
Personal protective equipment is regarded as a last line of defence and does not replace the need to eliminate hazards or reduce risks at source. It is issued free of charge and replaced when worn or damaged.
Training, Information and Supervision
All employees receive induction training that covers general health and safety rules, emergency procedures, safe use of equipment and reporting requirements. Task-specific training is provided for activities such as machine operation, deep kitchen cleans, washroom sanitisation, floor restoration and high-level cleaning.
Refresher training is delivered periodically and whenever there are changes in working methods, equipment or products. Supervisors provide on-site guidance and monitoring to ensure that training is applied in practice and that work is carried out to a safe standard.
Equipment, Machinery and Maintenance
We ensure that all equipment and machinery used in deep cleaning, such as vacuum cleaners, scrubber dryers, steam cleaners and carpet extraction machines, are suitable for their intended purpose and maintained in safe working order. Regular inspections and servicing are carried out in line with manufacturer guidance.
Defective equipment must not be used and must be reported immediately to a supervisor or manager. Only trained and authorised staff may operate powered equipment. Electrical equipment is subject to appropriate visual checks and testing to reduce the risk of electric shock or fire.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many cleaning tasks involve lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and repetitive movements. We assess manual handling risks and implement controls such as using trolleys, selecting lighter equipment, planning routes to reduce carrying distances and varying tasks to limit repetitive strain.
Employees are trained in safe lifting techniques and encouraged to ask for assistance when handling bulky or heavy items. Work practices are designed, as far as practicable, to minimise the risk of musculoskeletal injury.
Working in Client Premises
Our teams frequently work in occupied premises, including homes, offices and commercial sites. We take care to protect clients, their staff, visitors and property during cleaning operations. Warning signs are used where floors are wet or where cables and machinery present a trip hazard.
We maintain good housekeeping throughout our work, keeping walkways clear, securing cleaning equipment when not in use and removing waste promptly. Any damage, spills or hazards identified on site are reported to the client or site contact without delay.
Emergency Procedures and First Aid
Employees are briefed on emergency arrangements at each site, including fire exits, assembly points and local procedures. Fire safety measures are followed at all times, and exits and escape routes are kept clear.
First aid provision is organised in line with the needs of our operations. Staff know how to obtain first aid support and how to respond to incidents involving chemicals, slips, trips, falls or equipment. All accidents and significant incidents must be reported and recorded, with investigations undertaken to prevent recurrence.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
We monitor our health and safety performance through site inspections, audits, incident reports and feedback from employees and clients. Where shortcomings or new risks are identified, corrective actions are implemented promptly.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, legislation, equipment or working methods. Updated versions are communicated to all employees to ensure that health and safety remains an integral part of delivering reliable deep cleaning services in Bermondsey and the wider area.
